I'm reading a book titled, "The Church in the Workplace," by C. Peter Wagner. I picked it up because I see one of the greatest opportunities the Church has to transform culture is through the workplace. I'm trying to do some discovery and learning on this topic.
Beyond the weekend gathering of believers (the "nuclear church," or "local church"), the extended Church (ekklesia, "the people of God") spends most of its time, where? At work. However, I am aware that there is tension for the believer in trying to see how God fits in his or her business context. What I am learning, is that most believers do want to know how their relationship with God fits with their work. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem to fit.
Wagner finds that businesspeople perceive that the Church "lacked the necessary skills to contextualize the gospel for the business community." He also points out that, "When the people of God are gathered in their local churches on Sunday, the characteristics of a particular congregation or denomination ... are very important. The church might be Lutheran or Baptist or ..." Stonecreek or Northpoint or Mountain Lake. "However, on the other six days of the week, when God's people are in the workplace, those distinctions are not nearly as important. The most important thing out there is that they are believers" (meaning, when they meet another believer in the workplace).
I'm wrestling with some questions: How can I help equip or encourage businesspeople toward a biblical worldview of their work and workplace? How can I help businesspeople discover their purpose and affirm their work as the context God has called them to live their personal ministry?
I don't think the answer is another program or another workplace Bible
study. Not that programs are wrong or Bible studies won't help. It
seems to me to be more personal than that. It has to do with life
mission. It has to do with understanding the authority that God has
given them as followers of Christ. It has to do with knowing how to
walk with God and listen to His Spirit... learning His voice. It has to
do with, "YES! God is interested in business. Your business!"
What I do know is that the influencers of culture are in our workplaces. They are in our governments, banks, financial firms, design studios, media corporations, educational institutions, music studios, consulting groups, technology companies and, the list goes on. What would your business or workplace look like if you believed God was as equally interested in you and your workplace as He is the ministries of Stonecreek Church?
If you've got some insight, I'd love to hear.
